Character Name: Samandriel
Series: Supernatural
Timeline: Near the very end of 8.10 (Torn and Frayed) just before his death
Canon Resource Link: http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Samandriel (Note that while he's called Samandiriel for the text in this article, Samandriel seems to be the accepted spelling for just about everywhere. Because SPN often uses real angels as inspiration, names often get confused between canon and the mythological angel.)

Character Background: Samandriel is an angel, but we know little of his life before canon. Angels all seem to be older than humanity--Castiel is implied to be relatively young, and he still watched the first creatures move from water to land as a 'child'--but their exact ages are never revealed and seem to vary widely. Samandriel appears to be low ranking, so he's probably Castiel's age or younger, as older angels usually hold higher positions.

Angels are being of pure creation, and their true forms are massive and dangerous for most humans to behold. Therefore angels take vessels to move among humans safely, but only very few humans are potential vessels, and in order for an angel to take possession they must be given permission. While in a vessel the angel merges with the body in some ways, but there is always a level of disconnect between then angel itself and the vessel. The body that talks and people interact with and touch isn't the angel itself, though the angel is directing speech and touch and uses all the senses of the human body they're in.

In canon, he first appears at a supernatural auction, bidding for the Word of God, which is an ancient tablet written by Metatron that includes information about demons and how to close the gates of Hell, that can only be read by the prophet Kevin Tran. Samandriel enters a bidding war with the demon King of Hell, Crowley, but neither of them wins the tablet. We last see Samandriel in this episode after he asks Kevin's mother if she wants his and the angels' help protecting Kevin; she declines, and he accepts her answer and leaves.

At some point, likely directly after this scene, Samandriel is somehow captured by Crowley. It's difficult in SPNverse to hold an angel, and usually holy fire is necessary, but because Crowley has in-canon been joked about knowing everything, he apparently has a method for it. Crowley tortures Samandriel into revealing the names of all potential future prophets, which Crowley collects in hope of one being able to read the tablet after he abducts Kevin and takes possession of it.

An unclear amount of time passes but it's probably a few weeks to a month or two at most, with Samandriel still in captivity. In this time Crowley and his assistant Viggo manage to figure out that by driving screws into an angel inhabiting a vessel's head, they can tap into the angel itself, and the angel's 'programming' which not much is known about, but seems to be an underlying set of instructions for how they're supposed to act. Gaining access to it allows Crowley to discover the existence of an angel tablet, and though Samandriel is shortly thereafter rescued by the Winchesters and his brother Castiel, he dies minutes later after Castiel--whose own 'programming' is being manipulated by a being called Naomi in order to control him--kills him due to being unable to resist Naomi's orders.

Abilities/Special Powers: Angels have an extremely long list of abilities. They're all detailed here but the main ones they use are listed below:

Supernatural strength - Exactly what it sounds like; angels are several times stronger than humans. Castiel tips over an anvil in one episode with no apparent difficulty, for example.

Flight - Angels have metaphysical wings, that allow them to fly anywhere almost instantaneously. To most people this looks like teleporting, and they're not slowed or affected by doors, walls, or any other barriers.

Healing (Self) - Angels can heal just about anything done to their vessels, though it seems to take time if injuries are widespread or severe. Nothing done to a vessel is fatal to the angel itself. Angels themselves can be damaged by spells, particular weapons, overuse of their power, and a few other methods, but aside from being fatally stabbed by an angelsword they usually heal in time. Recovery is longer for damage to the angel itself, though; Castiel overuses his powers in one episode and is unconscious for at least a day, maybe several.

Healing (Others) - Angels can heal other beings completely with a touch, from injury or illness or otherwise. Normal angels lose this ability when cut off from Heaven, however, so it may not work in game.

Exorcism/Smiting - Angels can smite demons with a touch, or drive them from their vessels.

Angel whammy - Jokingly titled by Dean, this is a power where the angel touches any human and renders them unconscious for a time. It's entirely harmless and just used to subdue people without hurting them.

Telekinesis - This is standard telekinesis; angels usually use hand gestures to accompany the power, but they don't have to. Samandriel drives a stake out of his forehead with this power even while unable to move.

Supernatural perception - Angels can see the true forms of creatures like demons, they can 'read' the minds and surface thoughts of humans (and deeper ones, with intent), they can see Hellhounds, and can usually sense the presence/species of beings.

Third-Person Sample: Samandriel supposed this wasn't so bad.

It had taken a little while to get settled in and receive the entire welcome and explanation, but once he was finally left alone in his new room, he had a chance to try to relax a little bit. Of course that was easier said than done after everything that had happened, and though he was alone and safe enough for the moment in this room and he knew it, every little sound and unfamiliar sight made him start.

It wasn't very becoming of an angel of the Lord to be so jumpy.

The presence of people he knew in this strange place was a bit of a comfort, however, even if they weren't from the same point in time as himself; seeing Castiel again, especially before the war and Purgatory and Naomi, was a welcome surprise, and he knew that he could trust Dean. That was more than he expected to have when he suddenly appeared in this world, and more than he knew he would at home, where his fate didn't take a great deal of guessing.

He pushed those thoughts from his mind for the moment, setting about trying to concentrate on making the closet give him some new clothes. His were pretty much destroyed, and he certainly wasn't going to object to having something to wear that wouldn't be the first thing commented on whenever someone met him.

First-Person Sample: [The connection comes to life to show, mostly, red, until it's angled correctly toward the broadcaster's face. It's a young man, mid-twenties, who looks like he's literally been to hell and back; he's grimy and streaked with blood, the red and white uniform he's wearing torn and soaked with the substance as well.

Still, his gaze is focused, and though his voice isn't entirely steady he seems to be making an effort to look and sound as put-together and confident as possible.]

It appears that I'm lost.

[Which is something that shouldn't be possible for an angel, but he doesn't feel the need to mention that.]

I'm not sure if this device is connected to anyone else's, but if anyone can hear me, I have some questions that I would appreciate answers to should anyone be able to provide them.
